The setup: Drive: Samsung SH-S223Q. Updated with the latest firmware (SB03). OS: Windows XP SP3. Lightscribe drivers: 1.18.1.1 Burning software: Lightscribe Simple Labeler Media: HP Lightscribe-capable CDs and DVDs No other burning software (Nero, etc.) is installed - all have been removed. The data burns fine onto the disk. But when I try to burn lettering using Lightscribe, I receive the following error message: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program: C ... The application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. Then, the Lightscribe program crashes. Well, I'm contacting you, the Lightscribe support team. What's wrong and how do I fix it?

Hi priruss !
I made the reply below in another thread.
It is probably a run-time error and Microsoft has a webpage that should let you download the latest C++ run-time library for free.
I don't remember what the URL is, but it should be relatively easy to find.
Unlike a lot of their searches, I think it should go to the correct place if you search for something like "C++ run-time" into the search on any MS search page.
Also, you may require MS .NET V3.5 SP1
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply, but your suggestions did not help. Still getting the same error message and no Lightscribe.
I did remove the old Microsoft Visual C++ installed on the computer and updated with the new Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2008, but I couldn't find a direct link specifically called "run-time library" for Microsoft Visual C ++ on any of the Microsoft web sites. Admittedly, I am not a master programmer or IT professional and know nothing about C ++, what it does, or how to manipulate it. So, if you stumble across the direct link, please post it here.
Also, I already have MS .NET V3.5 SP1 installed.
Is this "Microsoft Visual C ++ run-time library" absolutely necessary for Lightscribe to work? I can't think of any other program that requires it, and I'm inclined to just nuke it off the system.

Hello again priruss !
The C++ Run-Time Library is basic to all systems.
It is the main module for things like Visual Basic, all versions of C, Fortran, Cobol, and just about everything else.
You REALLY should get it in my opinion, even if LightScribe Support says it isn't needed. You'll have a lot fewer problems with software on your systems.

Thanks again. I still can't find the direct link to download the runtime library (the part that's apparently blowing up when I try to run Lightscribe), so if you have it please post it here.

Hello again priruss !
I'm not certain, but I did a little quick research. I think the link below should get you what you're looking for.

Thanks for the reply and your patience, but your suggestion did not help. I installed the new C++ thing but I'm still getting the same error message and no Lightscribe.
I'm beginning to think that Lightscribe is just not going to work for me. Back to the Sharpie I guess.

Hi priruss !
Sorry to hear that it didn't help.
I just made a post under "Drives" about System Requirements you should see and maybe add your voice.

Priruss, I have the exact same DVD burner, and the exact same error with the C++ message. Has anyone figured out what the solution to this problem is yet? Thanks.

priruss, I guess I'll take third with the same problem... same drive, updated firmaware, did all the items that were discussed above. Running windows xp with sp3. Updated LSS. Tried lightscribe template labeler, surething and nero... all no luck. even uninstalled nero to see if something was conflicting there. So I'm very intereseted in what comes out of this post...

It looks like I have the same problem, but a bit more data. I have two systems running 32bit XP SP3 with the latest MS patches. They have different CD-R/W drives and their drivers are current. The drives are visible in the LS control panel. LS 1.18.3.2 is installed. LS Media from two different vendors has been used. The symptoms on the two systems are the same. Both Nero 7.11.10.0 and Nero 9.2.6.0 quit with an internal error when trying to write LS media. When retried, the C++ error message appears.
Using MSCONFIG to disable loading Startup items and only loading MS services and the LS service, after rebooting LS Simple Labeler quits with Error 4225. It quit with the C++ error before the MSCONFIG tweak. The LS knowledge DB saids that error 4225 could be an app conflict. None of the suspect software items from the knowledge DB are installed on either system. There are three other apps that can access the CD-R/W drive, Nero, iTunes and MS Media player. Removing Nero has no impact on the errors generated by LS Simple Labeler. LS Simple Labeler was the only app to run on the system after reboot.
I would try and older version of LS system, but I don't have one.
Anyone have other ideas I can test out ?

Hi jc !
I have OLD LS Software in my MS Office Live Workspace.
I'll need:
- You E-mail Address (required to grant access);
- Your Full Name (for my records); and
- A Nickname (for my records).
It sounds like your problem may be with your version of the C++ Run-time Library.
I'd recommend trying to upgrade it first.

Hello everyone I am very new with this lightscribe, I went out and bought a Lightscribe Labeler ( ATAPI iHAS220)
I burn a good amount of things a day, and trying to light-scribe over and over again. I have used many programs including Template Label-er by light scribe, Nero 7 iv also used Sonic and Sure-thing.
Every once in a while my light scribe label-er will not scribe the label on there, It will put a swirl around the disk. I don't understand why its doing it. People have told me that its just hot and needs to cool down, but sometimes I haven't even used the drive and it don't work. Its not that im trying to scribe to much, because its like 12 size font a few words.. I don't understand ..
can someone help ??

Hi nightridda187 !
LightScribe Media has Marks around the center (Hub Area).
LS Technology is both dependent and sensitive to the detection of these Marks.
The LS Marks are used for Media Detection, Positioning, and Timing.
I had trouble with the first 2 spindles from Memorex.
I was able to recover all but one of the disks (It had a scratch on the DATA side).
All I did was to make sure the Hub Area on the LABEL side was clean, even cleaning it just to make sure.
I did have disks which did not label and which cleaning did the trick.
I have never seen any streaks thought.

Hello again nightridda187 !
You are not alone, there is a post in this Forum about the same exact problem that even points to a disk image.
Try the Search for "smear" and see what you get.
I don't remember where it is, otherwise I would give you a link.

couldnt really find much when searching that, only thing that i have found was this :
Dear cimofj2, After
having some short term success, I am back to getting repeatedly smeared
labels, even though I am using LS Template Program. You mentioned that
the problem might be a calibration issue. Does LS have calibration
diagnostics and repair programs or do I need to take my PC back to the
folks that built it and installed the LS and let them attempt to
resolve the problem? Erin
is there a diagnostics or repair program i can try?

Sorry, I tried to find it with several different words and had no luck either.
When the LSS is issued, there is a matching Diagnostic Utility, but I'm not sure it will find the problem.

I found a post saying "Snow Leopard" BS BS lol does not have a compliant label-er for 64bit. I don't know much about mac software,
but could the problem be Im running Windows 7, on a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ 3.10GHz & 2 Gigs of ram?

People have been having problems with Windows 7, but it is usually with drive detection.
Snow Leopard is the same.

There have been some posts about a Registry Key called allocatecdroms having to be set to o (zero), but it doesn't appear in Vista (default=0).
It shouldn't appear in Windows 7 either.
The problem of a drive NOT being detected could be a cable problem or an Operating System problem.
Your drive IS being recognized though
That is a different problem than the above or what is happening in Snow Leopard.
I still have a feeling your problem relates to the LS Marks.
Either the Hub of the Media (disk) is dirty, smudged, or damaged or the LS Sensor (a fixed block next to the Hub on the drive) is intermittent or weak and having trouble "seeing" the LS Marks.
You may have to take the drive in for servicing.

Hi, I'm new to this, bought computer with LightScribe already installed 2 years ago, never used it but bought the LightScribe CD's the other day. can't find a support # to call so here goes: I get the error"The disc in the Light Scribe drive is not recognized. Please ensure that the disc is a Light Scribe disc and is inserted in the drive with the label side down. Clean the disc per the Light Scribe documentation." It is a Light Scribe disc and I cannot find the cleaning documentation.. It is a new disc, don't see why I would need to "clean"it. Please HELP!!!!

Hi kitkat !
I had trouble with the first 2 spindles of Memorex that I bought.
Cleaning recovered all but one disk which had a bad DATA side.
I have since burned a disk which before AND after cleaning had a visible spot on the LABEL side.
The references to cleaning are in the "LightScribe Toolbox" under the "Knowledge Base" and they can be found at:
http://www.lightscribe.com/support/kb/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=33

Currently LS only does grayscale on whatever color the LABEL side is.
This means that the disk will gray up the surface and where it doesn't burn stays the color of the surface.

It keeps telling me to restart computer. I design the label, it starts the burn then never gets anywhere. Then tells me to restart again. I restart and go thru the same routine again.

Can anyone help me, I'd like to unsubscribe from this thread. It's not clear how the button subscribe/unsubscribe works, as even though I'm currently subscribed to this thread I'm only offered to subscribe to it not unsubscribe?
Is there a link on the lightscribe site where one can contact technical support for help?

I just purchased an I/O Magic Internal SATA 22X DVD R/RW drive. I installed it on my computer with Windows XP Professional SP3. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the LightScribe software a couple of times. The trouble is I keep getting a Runtime Error when I try to write a label to my disk. The error states: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library. Runtime Error! Program: C:\... This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it an usual way. Please contact this application's support team for more information. I have been in touch with the LightScribe Support Team and the person I was working with came up with "Your HDD is bad". The thing is, the drive is a brand new 750GB drive that has never had anything installed on it, so I threw that one out. I have 671GB of free space on my drive, so I have plenty of room on the drive for the program. Can anyone out there help me? I'm not a newbie when it comes to computers, I used to be a Tech. But this one has me baffled, I was not a software tech. I could build them and repair them, this one though arrgghh! I finally saw that several others have this problem also. I didn't get to see the whole subject until I posted my blurb. I will do as suggested and search not only Micro$oft for a solution but the entire Internet. Thanks to everyone for their advice. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem. The LightScribe person I was working with led me to believe this!

I don't know if this will help or not, but I've seen some posts which refer to the setting in BIOS for SATA drives.
I think they were saying something about changing the interface somehow.
I think it was to make the interface run differently.

About runtime error/not seeing lightscribe drive/can't burn lightscribe/XP....
After installing a new hard drive I had the runtime error when trying to burn lightscribe. A new disk burner, too - Samsung SH-223L. I found this problem to be common in a week long search for an answer. I tried all the usual fixes: reloading runtime library, making sure cd in registry set to 0, checking BIOS, uninstalling/installing LSS and drive again, latest updates.... and whatever else I may be forgetting - but nothing worked.
Nero does not even recognize the drive for lightscribe - I tried versions 6,7 and 8.
I did find a solution. I changed the Samsung for what i had before - an LG (I heard that Lite-on also worked fine). Important to note that it was with the 'old' pins/ribbon connection, not the sata connection. I also downloaded Cyberlink LabelPrint : http://www.cyberlink.com/downloads/trials/index_en_CA.html
Anyway, all I did was click on 'System' thru the Control Panel. (computer always recognized the disk drive just fine ie: no new hardware found). Click 'material' tab (that's a french version - maybe English is 'hardware'), then 'device manager'. Right click on the lightscribe drive and choose 'update driver'. Select 'no not this time', next 'choose from a list', next 'don't look i'll choose the driver'. I changed the driver by picking it from the hardware list (not a specific driver listed but only the CDROM choice). Maybe coincidental luck, but even though cyberlink labelprint also did not previously work, it does now. (Nero still does not see the drive - but since success with LabelPrint, I did not try to go ahead and burn a lightscribe label with Nero)
Lightscribe discs are now burning just fine.
I know my explanation is not great but I did get it thru System, right click drive, chose to manually update driver and chose CDROM (last in the list - no mapi). I really need lightscribe and am afraid to even repeat the process since this finally worked!
As a side-note, with a new hard drive there were also constant, automatic online updates going on. Maybe some of those auto-downloads are necessary to fix some glitch? It did take a week for this to finally work - maybe it was just coincidence and what I did was inconsequential.
Had to share. I know this problem is widespread and ongoing for years and driving people crazy.
