Well, maybe it's not solved, but I got Lightscribe Template Labeler to work.
This is what you have to do:

1a) Start up the program and attempt to burn your label. The LSS Error 4231 will pop-up.
1b) X out the program (upper right corner).

2a) Start up the program again, try to burn the label again. The same Error will pop-up.
2b) X out of the program again.

3a) Start the Template Labeler this third time, attempt to burn the label -
- - -  THIS TIME IT WILL WORK .....

My Burner hardware is an old external "MAD DOG Multimedia Drive" (out of business now, www.mdmm.com) made by Samsung.

# TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182M SB04 USB Drive. and I had upgraded the Firmware to SB06 through the samsung website.

I don't think upgrading the drives firmware really helped the LightScribe part, since it still takes three times to burn the Label. Maybe it only upgraded the burning of data only.

I have an HP 17" Laptop zd8000 Intel Pentium 4 (3.40 GHz) 2.0 GB Ram, XP Pro Media Center Edition Ver. 2002, SP2, ATI mobility RADEON X600 (at the time it was the best you could get)...

Now I got it to work on the first try!

This is what I did:
1) Make sure "Control Panel" is on and showing in the "notification area" (lower right corner, where your clock is).

2) Turned on my external: "Mad Dog LightScribe Drive"
Go to "Controll Panel" and make sure it sees the drive you just turned on - if it doesn't see it - click the "refresh" button, click "o/k".

3) Open LightScribe Template Labeler. I make my own labels, so I always go to the blank label and click on: "Click to add image".

4) I find my custom label and Click: "Preview and Print" a preview will pop-up.
Click: "Print".

5) Your "LightScribe Drive Tray" will Open on its own, put your media in label side down, then the "light" on your "Drive" will blink on and off - wait until it stops blinking.

6) Click: "o/k" on that pop-up window that states your drive tray is open.
The preview window should have this circle going around and around.
It should show some time it takes to do the label.

This is the first time I got it to work, on the first try.

GOOD LUCK

I was getting error 4231 just like many other users have reported and I was able to get past it by disabling my wireless card while burning discs.  I'm not sure why this works but it does.
