I have a HP Pavilion computer with a ATAPI DVD DH16A6L-C ZHCG 173 drive

I recently burned a number of DVD's using this system and have enountered some of the same problems that others have... I found I had to reinstall the drivers as per HP web page.
Drive Cannot Read Discs in Windows Vista HP Pavilion a6857c Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (Canada - English)

However, even after updating, I found 2 in about 18 disks printed only half the label. Is this a media problem or a drive problem? The 2 failures do not look the same (ie. different portions of the labels printed. However the same amount of surface area seems to have been printed. This leads me to suspect it is a media fault and not a drive fault since disks before and after the failures have printed fine.

The media is HP.

Is there any recourse? ie. does HP warranty the media?

Is the drive able to recover the job? I don't know the technology, does it do a rasterization like a printer with the disk stationary, or does it spin the disk and modulate the laser?

Does the software spit out some kind a of log file somewhere to indicate why it stopped?

The diagnostic util I downloaded says everything is fine.
