Often (but not always) when using my DVD drive to a LightScribe a disc, I get the following message:

An internal LightScribe System Software (LSS) error has occurred with the LightScribe service. Please restart your computer and try your label again. (4231)

When that occurs, the drive locks up.  I restart the system and try to complete the process, but the drive locks up again.  Then, I shut down the system again and manually open the drive drawer (using a paperclip) and remove the disc.  It may have a partially-scribed label or none at all.

  • I have an LG GH20 drive; I am running Windows XP.
  • Neither the Nero 7 software that came with the drive nor the LSS that I downloaded seems to prevent this problem.
  • I am using Memorex LightScribe CD-R media.

Help !!!

You're not alone! I get the same message and have tried restarting the LSS service with no success. I've tried dif, apps, reinstalling the LSS, running diagnostics, disabled antivirus, etc etc.

Lightscribe folks, how do we fix error 4231??!

Did you try the lightscribe diagnostics utility from the downloads section?

A web search of that error number found a couple of users that encountered a conflict between the Intel chip and the lightscribe software. The lightscribe diagnostic utility changes a settings to work-around the issue.

Yes, and it doesn't do a #$*&^## thing.  Lightscribe is going to be responsible for a spike in Sharpie sales I think.

Hi Dudditz !

I compared your log with the one I ran this month, and the only thing that stood out was:

SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LightScribeService\Security\

I had thought before that the following was a problem, but my system (That has been fine since the day I got it about 13 months ago) is running fine also reports it.

SOFTWARE\INTEL\Intel Application Accelerator - Not detected

I don't know what the "Security" line means or if it is a problem.

I believe that registry location has something to do with the Windows firewall settings
but I deleted it and still get the error.
I had to take my disc to another machine with a lightscribe drive and received an error
statiung that the disc may be dirty and the data in the middle could not be read.
So I wiped it off and it labeled fine on the other computer.
However, that still doesnt explain why my Sony is not working on this PC

Hello again Dudditz !

If the other computer couldn't read the DATA in the middle and the disk labeled in the other system too, your drive may be out of calibration!

Hi there, I do have error 4231, too.
LS_Update_1.18.5.1_.exe did not fix that problem. Diagnostic Utility does not report any problem.
LS Printing Dialog looses contact with drive, and hangs - has to be shut down with Taskman.
Error 4231 has nothing to do with used type / brand of media. I'm using DVD +R, DVD -R, several brands - mostly Inten. 16x and Memo. 16x - none of them prevents lightscribe error!
My hardware is Samsung external SE-S224Q; Athlon 64, mobo GA-K8-NF9; Geforce 9600 GT, Vista (32).

Maybe someone of the LS-stuff can give us an advice.

regards - Antoine

I was getting error 4231 just like many other users have reported and I was able to get past it by disabling my wireless card while burning discs.  I'm not sure why this works but it does.

Hi Antoine !

Sorry, I'm just a User like you and don't know what a 4231 Error indicates, but the latest software version is 1.18.8.1.

Give it a try, if you haven't done it yet.

See if that makes a difference?!?!?
