This problem is also appearing on some of the Windows 7 forums. Solution seems to be both in the .exe file (that checks operating system) and the .ini file accompanying the instalation program itself.
I have read that some people have solved it but have not been able to get the solutions in hand. At he same time it should be easy for Lightscrive itself to provide a solutions. The programs and system software will run as long as the checks included in the .exe and installer are deleted

Here is how I was able to install the latest Lightscribe software on Windows 7, unlike Henk I am going to share with everyone on on how to install this software:
1. Go here to download the latest system software: http://www.lightscribe.com/downloadsection/Windows/index.aspx?id=810
2. Once downloaded double click on the *.exe file to run the installer. Once it gets to the "operating system is not adequate" error, leave the window open and do not click "OK" just yet.
3. You will now have to navigate to the temporary directory to where the MSI file it extracted is. This can be found in "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp". In my case, it created a directory called "{494F8C6F-CB8A-4AF2-B85D-A238A88DB575}".
4. Copy the LS_HSI.msi file to some other location, then click on "OK" to that dialog box and the directory should automatically delete itself.
5. Next you will have to use a hex editor to edit the part of the installer where it checks the NT version. I used XVI32 which is freeware. Open the LS_HSI.msi file in the editor and go to the hexadecimal address "19C976" or alternatively search for VersionNT until you see 600.
6. Change VersionNT = 600 to 601. and save and exit.
7. The installer may complain about not having administrator rights for some reason. I am in a domain enverionment so I right cliked the installer and ran it as "Administrator".
8. Repeat the same process for the Template Labeler program. The hex address for the NT version is located at 57882.
9. Have fun burning labels again and be sure to thank the Lightscribe developers for making a stupid operating system check!

I am perfectly willing to share but editing .msi files is against EULA's and probably against forum rules, that is why I am not giving the download link to the updates installation-files.

EULAs-schumlas, I would like to see Lightscribe sue someone (and actually win) because they edited ONE byte in a installation program and violated some clause in their EULA to get their freeware working because some code jockey decided to include a version check in the installer. What would be their grounds? That's like Apple saying that you cannot run OS X on non-Apple hardware yet companies continue to sell x86 computers that are compatible with OS X. I also could care less about any "rules" here because the sole purpose of creating an account was to post this temporary workaround and to help others from wasting an afternoon searching Google for a fix.
If using a hex editor gets your panties in a bunch, then wait until 2011 or so for Lightscribe to fix this problem. While you're waiting I'll continue to use the hardware and media that I paid for on the next version of Windows.

I had similar problems using Nero 9 and the lightscribe software would not install. I went to the Hewlett Packard Site and downloaded a file SP36971 and it now works within Nero 9. I am prompted to update the software when I use Lightscribe but I ignore that and it seems to work OK

Well, the solution worked on a desktop running Windows 7, but I was unable to install it until I turned UAC off. Since I am not part of a domain, MSI's are not able to have their compatibilities changed to Administrator, even though I have Administrator privileges.
Many thanks to those of you who have found the way to do this. Very creative debugging I must say.

I just installed the latest LSS, and the Diagnostics on win7 32-bit. It had no problems installing, but won't start up. Diagnostics tries to start the LSS, but can't. Also seemed to make the system unstable. For some reason win live mail wouldn't start up after that, and when I restarted the computer, it locked up on shutdown, had to use reset button. Went back to XP partition, so I haven't tried to repair yet. Will post updates.

Update: Diagnostics says: "Status: The Lightscribe service did not start"
But oddly, I've had no trouble installing the labelers. I burned a label in simple labeler, which came out fine. So I guess it works, just with a few minor glitches...

Hi HotRod and Everybody else !
I've posted this on other threads.
The Diagnostic Utility must be "Run as administrator or you'll get an ERRONIOUS message about the service not started.
Go to the Shortcut's Property page; Advanced; and then check box for "Run as administrator".
You'll get a security box but the report will be correct.
This has been reported to LS Support.

I have a Sata 10 drive duplicator that requires the data LSI file of the finished lightscribe rendition. When the lightscribe software is initially installed, the LS drive selector is set to TSSTcorpCDDVDW SH-S223L SB01. This allows the LSI file to be saved so that it can be burned to a cd-r and then uploaded into the duplicator for the purpose of burning 10 discs at a time.
THE PROBLEM: On my Dell 1720 with windows seven, I get a critical error message indicating an internal system software error 550. Anyone have any insight here on how to fix this? If I continuosely attempt to close the error box, it will eventually create the data file. But its corrupt and the DVD duplicator rejects it. I also have a computer with windows xp, and the procedure works perfectly.

Found a thread on the EVGA website that worked for my setup. Changed my LiteOn iHAS424B from JMicron
SATA 8 (red) to SATA 4 (South Bridge Chipset, black), and my
Lightscribe is finally working. Flawlessly. Evidently JMicron drivers don't play well with Lightscribe This after registry tweaks, every Lightscribe software suggestion available, BIOS changes, etc., etc., my problem was with mobo drivers Have already posted to EVGA forums.
Best of luck to all.

I just read this fix and have to admit that I am not techy enough to execute it.
I have learned that my GSA-30L DVD CD RRW will not read DVD's. It handles CD's just fine but not DVD's. After spending several hours trying to track down a new driver unsuccessfully, I have concluded that the disk drive became corrupt when I installed Windows 7 Professional.
Lightscribe does not provide a fix, HP does not and Microsoft does not.
Do I have to buy a new disk drive or is there another way to resolve?
Thanks

Bad decision to update the lightscribe software on my win7.
It stopped working, I uninstalled it, now it doesn't let me reinstall.
I downloaded the latest system software, I am administrator, run the install as admin, yet at some point it says "can't initiate lightscribe service. You don't have privileges to install services"
Do not update it!!!
Any solution? This is obviously a new bug from the last update.

Hi;
I have HP Pavilion with window 7 and LightScribe DVD SuperMulti Drive/ Cd-Burner for couple year. For the past year I got the problem that my HP Pavilion got freez alot. Before it freez, the light on the LightScribe Dvd will light up and make a sound like it load something (but there is nothing in side) and then the mouse curse will not move and non of keyboard will work neither. I wonder if it has something to do with lightscribe dvd that I need to upgrad my driver of something? If anyone has this kind of problem with this computer.
Thank you

Although LightScribe System Software is free & obtainable directly from the Lightscribe http://www.lightscribe.com/downloadSection/windows/index.aspx?id=810 site - you'll notice that the latest LightScribe ESD software [LS_Update_1.18.26.7_.exe] - fails to fully complete its install due to an error within their latest LightScribe system software update as this is an issue w/ either the software makers/venders or uploaders! So you can't use it & so either wait for a new LightScribe software update or just use an earlier LightScribe software version as follows:-
DOWNLOAD NOW
File name LS_Update_1.18.24.1_.exe
File size 13.0 MB
Revision 1.18.24.1
Release Date June 20, 2011
Notes New drive support
Requirements LightScribe enabled drive, media, and labeling software also needed.
In order to correctly install any previous LightScribe System Software which is an earlier LightScribe System Software version release rather than the current installed version:- the same still applies to upgrading to any new LightScribe System Software release version:-> please go to the "Control Panel" & "open up "Applications and features" & in there you'll need to select "Lightscribe System Software" so that this software can be fully removed & then proceed to un-install it! - After that you'll be able to fully install any previous/new LightScribe System Software as a clean install.
The above [LS_Update_1.18.24.1_.exe] software package will fully install the LSS on any Windows 7 Enterprise/Professional (x64) RTM Build 7600 & Windows 8 Enterprise/Professional (x64) Build: 9200 operating systems which was obtained from out of a portion of my previous BD-R (LightScribe web-site) LightScribe System Software.mht complete web page together w/ ESD backup of an older LightScribe software version which I had done & still use due to those [LS_Update_1.18.26.7_.exe] Windows 8 (x64) installation issues!
LightScribe was conceived by Hewlett-Packard engineer Daryl Anderson. Further details can be found at Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LightScribe regarding LightScribe which has now ended in May 2011 & includes details about a stable release v1.18.24.1 for computer's LighScribe Optical Drives, & as such would be classified as the software part of of a computer's LighScribe Optical Drives hardware! Although HP www.hp.com did & still possibly supply www.lightscribe.com with their lightscribe drivers for downloads - one can also get them from HP as well - but maybe some users would not know exactly where to go within HP's site as HP aren't very clear with regards to finding this old data & the LightScribe Optical Drive would be useless without the LightScribe System Software due to LightScribe which ended in May 2011!
"Beginning in May 2011, HP LightScribe® technology optical disc drives will be at the end of their production life in HP Desktop Workstations and Commercial Desktop PCs."
Here is HP (US) alternative to the www.lightscribe.com site due to these "lightscibe - multiple site failures" over the week-ends & on week-days as no one seems to get much from LighScribe!
If any of the above LightScribe software fails - then you could either try to use the HP LightScribe System Software - v1.18.20.1 REV: A. (sp51638.exe) made by HP on their US site http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitemb-91820-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en as I've tested it out on my RTM edition of Windows 8 Professional (x64) - Build 9200 it both correctly installed & worked each time under (3) different clean install tests - or if that fails for any reasons then you could try one that Nero provides within either Nero 11 & 12 suites & try to use the latest Nero 11/12 software build - as both the Nero 11/12 suites & above provide LightScribe system software which usually gets installed during any clean Nero 11/12 installation!
Under Windows 8 Enterprise/Professional (x64) - should the LightScribe System Software for Nero 12 Platinum fail to be installed, you'll then need to use the www.lightscribe.com site to both download & manually install the LightScribe System Software yourself after Nero 12 Platinum has been installed - as I manually installed LightScribe System Software LS_Update_1.18.24.1_ which was obtained from a previous Blu-ray backup as I was unable to locate it within Nero 12 Platinum possibly caused by the new LightScribe System Software build install error which I explained in my first two lines (top) et cetera
a) This is where LightScribe System Software should be placed within Nero 12 Platinum (Nero Express) once it´s fully installed as per both of these screenshots shows!
I also had to manually install Nero CoverDesigner as Nero now provides this as a freebie add-on which has to be downloaded seperately for their new Nero 12 suites! Notice that the LightScribe System Software is also available within the Nero CoverDesigner as well!
b) This is where LightScribe System Software should be placed within Nero 12 Platinum (Nero CoverDesigner) once it´s fully installed as per both of these screenshots shows!
An alternative possibly if it works is for you to select an appropriate LightScribe software from "your LightScribe product manufacturer which will have the best knowledge of your specific configuration and needs, and they are recommended as your first source of updates whenever possible." - Use the "Dropdown Listings" & then save an appropriate executable file to your "Downloads" folder & then run the ESD after the download has completed as it may be able work w/ most LightScribe Optical Drives on the market today!
Notice:- Roxio Creator 2012 Pro & below doesn't provide any "LightScribe" system software during any installs at all! If you use any Roxio 2009 & above products, you'll then need to use the www.lightscribe.com site for your "LightScribe" system software!
