I am getting a message:
A Lightscribe disc was not detected in the drive.
I have a Memorex DVD External Recorder with lightscribe. It is a multi-format 24x DVD/CD writer.
I also have memorex lightscribe DVD+R disc.
Any suggestions to what might be going on?

As long as you have no other problems with the drive, make sure you have that latest version of the LSS (Lightscribe System Software) installed and try cleaning the index markings in the hub area of the disc. There seems to have been bad Lightscribe Memorex discs in older (over 1 year ago) batches. Try putting a disc in that you have already successfully burned a Lightscribe label onto and see if your drive recognizes the disc as a Lightscribe disc.

Clean it.
No dust. No dirt. No smudges from fingers. Clean makes everything gravy.

Hi there, I'm having the same issue! I use LSTL on a regular basis, and a few days ago I ran into the same problem. I updated the software, I did a check up on the driver, re-installing it - etc. I keep getting the error that it doesn't recognize the disc. I cleaned the disc in question, and have tried multiple other discs, to the point of opening a brand new package... any ideas?

If your system is recognizing the drive but not the media in the tray and all other read/write functions are OK try putting a Lightscribe disc in that you have successfully burned in the past. You don't have to actually print anything on it, just see if the known good media is recognized. Do you remember installing any programs or utilities or changing any hardware or configuration since Lightscribe last worked? Think especially about an application or drive emulation package that may be running in the background. Since you are using LSTL I assume your OS is Windows. Thanks Jim B -
I realized today that I didn't actually have the most recent LSS installed, and got that going. I don't have any successfully burned discs at hand - I label discs for clients, and I can't believe I haven't made any for myself!
I first noticed the problem about a week ago. I'm running Vista. As for system changes, I pulled in a Word Compatibility Pack on Jan 15, and a huge swath of updates yesterday, when I realized that I hadn't had normal windows system updates turned on. There were probably a few other minor system changes - but I can't think of anything that would affect that drive. I've scoured my task manager for any odd processes, I don't see anything unfamiliar. Would love to hear any ideas...

Is your drive internal or external? If it happens to be a USB external try it in a different USB port. (NO HUBS!!) Assuming you checked everything in the two links posted and there have been no hardware changes/additions you have made above try these:
1) Use the Lightscribe Diagnostic Utility and see if it finds any problems.
2) Try using the Vista System Restore utility to roll the system back to an earlier configuration. If you noticed the problem a week ago I wouldn't worry about any system changes after that point in time. What version of Office/Word are you using? Uninstalling that compatibility pack to see if it may be a part of the problem should be an easy try. If it was properly installed it should be listed in your add/remove program listing.
3) Somehow someway try a known good lightscribe disc. (borrow a disc you have previously burned)
4) Depending on the type of drive and your computer ability try your drive in another computer.
5) Unfortunately beyond these suggestions there isn't anything I can think of that would be feasable to try in the field by a user to positively identify the source of the problem.

1. Diagnostic Utility didn't find any issues.
2. After backing up everything (twice) I rolled back all the way to factory reset. No luck.
3. Still can't get my hands on a disc- but have a few requests out.
4. Its an internal drive on an HP Slimline
5. DOH! Thanks for the help you've offered. I'm wondering - does anyone know if there is any kind of formal tech support offered?

Unfortunately to my knowledge official Lightscribe support does not exist anymore or at least I haven't found it. I would try HP support and keep trying until you get a rep who doesn't just refer you to this site for help. You have a PM.....(click on "Control Panel' at the top of the Forum main page)

I have a brand new spindle of 50 branded LS disks - most are not being recognized as "Lightscribe" - go figure. I have the latest software - firmware - BIOS - application.
Some disks work and most dont - just spits them out after "analytically processing and thinking" for about 3 minutes! Whoever designed this?

To answer your question two HP engineers are credited with inventing the Lightscribe process about six or seven years ago. Out of curiosity what brand of blanks are you using?
