When i try to burn labels it says print process failed : A communication error has occured with the lightscribe drive...? any ideas why? It prints only a ring aroung the middle of the cd and then the error pops up. I downloaded both the diagnostic utility and the software..diagnostic found no problems..any other ideas??

I have managed to print only 3 dvd-r labels after many hours of failure . Does it matter the disk is LIGHTSCRIBE DVD PLUS R or DVD-R

Hello, I have exactly the same problem. Whatever I try, it always results in a "Communication error". After I looked through this and other forums I found that there is a conflict with other burning-software like Magix and Deamon-tools and others. Both are installed on my computer but exiting these of stopping the service won't help. I even connected the Lightscribe-burner to my Laptop on which nothing of the mentioned software is installed but got the same message.
The burner is a Lite-On connected directly to an USB 2.0-port. I'm running XP-professional.
As I tried for so many hours without the delivery of just one single label I am deeply disappointed of Lightscribe and I must regret that I wasted my money for this.
Can anyone help me further?

I was having the same issue when I first installed a Lite-On ihas422 drive. After much reasearch it was suggested that if I had updated my chipset drivers, I should reinstall the drivers that came with my motherboard "GigaByte M61P-S3 with an NVIDIA chipset. After I installed the original drivers that came with the board all is working perfectly. Have burned Data and Labels on both CDR and DVD media with both NERO8 and Lightscribes free Template Labler without any problems. Hope this heads you in the right direction to resolve your problem.

I don't know if this will work for everyone with this problem but it seemed to work for me.
I too searched for an answer to this problem and found nothing that worked. I had been able to burn a couple of labels OK before but now it wouldn't work. The diagnostic would show no errors but it also shows no media too. I tried both sides of the disk but it still showed no media. This is a new system and I have been trying different settings in BIOS and downloading new updated drivers for everything and have about half filled up my new TB drive just with updates and still don't have it all working to my satisfaction. But I digress. The drive was burning DVDs OK, I did have to change the setting to DVD ROM to get my TV DVD player to read the disk, but then I ran into this stupid problem with the labels. The fix?? My SATA ports were set to AHCI in BIOS, I switched this back to IDE and retried the label and now it works. Somebody has dropped the ball on the drivers or the LS software. I would have to say it's the LS software because everything else works except burning a label.

I'm getting the same communications errors.
But I don't know how to change the SATA drive characteristics.
I'm using an HP dvd1270i drive, mounted in a USB enclosure box. The SATA interface is inside the box, and I don't think it can be reconfigured.
Any ideas? The drive writes and reads data perfectly - it's just the LightScribe labelling that won't work!

Some of the threads I've read seem to point to the way a drive is connected.
For Internal Drives, it seems to be the Master/Slave Jumper and/or the Position on the Cable.
For External Drives, it may be the USB Port used.
One of my Flash Drives had a program that ran when it was connected and it recommended using a different USB Port.
When I connected the Flash Drive to a different USB Port, the program ran again and said this was a better port!?!?!

Swapping USB ports doesn't seem to help ..... and it takes ages to try, because you have to reboot with the drive plugged into the new port before it will recognise it.
The diagnostic utilities all report no problems.
But as soon as I try printing (using the LightScribe Simple Labeller) I get "communications errors".
I've sent all the diagnostic info off the HP support to see whether they can help. (Last time HP support said it was probably a drive fault - so I returned the drive and swapped it for a replacement - identical problem.)

One Forum User thought he had an HP LS Drive because it had the LS "swoosh" on the front of the tray, but when he popped the tray out it didn't have the LS Sensor near the hub.
It took about 6 months for HP to send him a good replacement because their Database was wrong. Once they sent him the same model drive again.
This LS Sensor is what looks like a fixed LED Block that reads the LS Marks on the LS Disks.
These Marks are used for Media Detection, Positioning, and Timing.
So pop the tray out and make sure it has the LS Sensor.
There's a picture in the "Knowledge Base" under the "LightScribe Toolbox."

I can't really check for the presence of an LS sensor on my drive.
It's not a slim-line drive like on a laptop, where the tray contains the hub and the read/write head. It's a full-size 5.25" drive, and the tray is just that - a plastic disc holder with no electronics attached to it - they're all fixed inside.
I've tried peering through the letter-box slot using a torch, but can't really see any internal details.
I think "mechanical man" might be on the right track - he said "My SATA ports were set to AHCI in BIOS, I switched this back to IDE and retried the label and now it works."
But because the SATA port is in the USB storage box, not on my laptop, I don't think there's any way to change their settings - unless anyone can tell me how?
btw, the reason for buying an extra DVD drive, when I already have one on my laptop, is compatibility - the laptop can write and then read its own DVDs - but they can't be read on my wife's Mac. And DVDs written my my new HP drive (HP dvd 1270i) can be read on her machine. So it's solved one problem. LightScribe came as a "bonus" feature - shame I can't get it to work!

Today I have come across the following statement on the LightScribe website

Still, your drive is made by HP, and LightScribe is an HP subsidiary!
So it should work!
Except for the one drive I mentioned, I've only seen one or two problems with HP drives!

Error 4231 Error -- I wished that I had reviewed this forum and other before waasting my time and money on this LightScribe Drive and disks.
LightScribe has NO support, no contact Information and and based on the posts in forum isn't monitored. I feel need to post everywhere the lack of support online or access to by LightScribe so others waste time and money on this product.
My personal opnion and experience.

I worked my way through 2 - 4231 Error after over a year without any problems.
Here are the steps I had to take.
Maybe the can help you find your problem.
I'm using an HP Pavillion dv9825nr Notebook PC, running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1+.
I also have an HP PhotoSmart C8180 All-In-One Printer. Both have built-in LS Drives.
Everything has been running LSS fine since 4/08.
I had 2 Instances of the LS TL running;
The one which had the highest percent done got a 4231 Error;
Both labeling processes stopped;
I rebooted the system several times;
I ran both the LS_Update and the Diagnostic Install in repair mode and rebooted the system again;
The DU would "Not Respond" until I popped the tray in my system out and pushed it back in;
The DU would not recognize the media in my printer's drive until I popped the tray out and pushed it back in;
The DU would not recognize the drive in my system until I told it to "Scan for LightScribe drives and media" again;
I tried to restart the First Instance (the one in my system) and got a "(520)" Error saying there might be dirt or a smudge on the disk and to wipe it;
It gave me the options "Help" "Cancel Print" "Try Again";
The "Help" option brought up the "Troubleshooting" webpage;
I wiped the LABEL side (nothing had been burnt) and selected "Try Again";
The burning process started again;
I waited until the First Instance finished;
It finished successfully;
I restarted the Second Instance;
I got a "(4225)" Error;
It gave me the options "Help" "Cancel Print";
I selected "Cancel Print";
I restarted the Second Instance again;
It restarted successfully;
I waited until the Second Instance finished;
It finished successfully;
I started 2 new Instance again both running at the same time;
They both finished successfully;
I started a new First Instance when the Second Instance was at 40%;
The Second Instance finished successfully and was shut down;
The First Instance got another 4231 Error, but was left up until the Second Instance finished successfully;
Only a small portion (about 10%) of the label had been burned;
I rebooted the system and wiped the LABEL side surface;
I restarted the LS TL and selected the same LSL File and restarted the burning process;
It started burning and got beyond 10%;
It finished successfully.
CONCLUSION:
The effected disks were Memorex LightScribe V1.2;
The drives got "hung-up" possibly due to dirt or a smudge on the LABEL side surface;
Wiping the LABEL side surface with a dry cloth helped "fix" the burning problem;
As several Users on the Forum attest, it appears most of the problems in the LightScribe Template Labeler seem to happen in the burn process.

I will try, I am getting this on every try with Every try using LS simple or template labeler. I have wasted several disks and would like to contatc LS directly but that seems to be impossible.
I wil attempt and try other disks but that has not been a positive experience or based on posts and online seems to be a recurring theme.
Again thanks, and will update are some more tries and wasted time and money.

I have tried a different brand of disks - same errors. I have tried LS Quick Label, Label Template and now Nero 7 and 8. I can burn DVD and MP3's to drive without any issues.
Can someone from LS actually respond or can someone provide a support number or email for this product/service. Beside recommending purchasing new HP drive and only HP disks. If your selling service and license product it should work and have support.
I was finally able to get to 83%, and reading forum it is pathetic that LS has posting customer tries, fail, try, fail, tray and finally get it to work(3rd time - wast of time and disks) and having to repeat and that it is actually considered acceptable.
I will keep trying, not very smart or just pig headed or maybe both.

Good day, I had the same error, tried everything suggested, i resolved my problem by: i had a lexmark printer connected that was on, i simply swithed the printer off while doing the lightscribe burning process since then did not had the problem again. Worth a try cheers

I have to agree with you totally. I have never been so disappointed in an HP product as I have this lightscribe that came with my HP Pavilion a6400z desktop, running WindowsVISTA, which I positively hate even worse then the lightscribe drive. I made sure and bought the correct discs as I bought them through the HP.shopping.com site. And, I"ve not been able to make a single label. And when I tried to get HP to help me, the tech told me that this was a third party item and they couldn't help me. BS. GOD BLESS TO ALL

Perhaps it is a bit late with most people probably trashing the lightscribe drives but here is what happened to me and the solution to the problem. I purchased a Benq DW1625 lightscribe DVD burner years ago and used it my video computer. Everything worked wonderful there. I then put the DW1625 into my everyday computer so I could use the lightscribe portion to create labels. I downloaded the latest Lightscribe drivers from this sight and thought all would be well. Well it was not. I received the "Waiting for drive to become ready" banner and the pop-up "communication error occurred with Lightscribe drive please restart system........." After trying everything possible: 1) Switching from slave to master 2) Updating ATA controller driver 3) Installing new IDE cable 4) Uninstalling and reinstalling Nero Ultra 7 5) Uninstalling and reinstalling the latest Lightscribe drivers 6) Reinstalled DW1625 fimware to same latest revision. I was about ready to give up when I found a remote thread that said the recent lightscribe drivers could be the cause of the problem and try removing then and installing the older driver LS 1.021. Well I uninstalled the most recent and installed the old and Lightscribe fired right up and burned my disc and a couple after that. If anyone wants to try this fix you will need to uninstall the current drivers using the install exe and select remove when asked. After removing then install the older driver pack. No restart is required.
Since the link is for a download I would like the Moderators to review before releasing thread.
