I am getting the following error message trying to install the LSS software:

Error 1920.Service LightScribeService Direct Disc Labeling service (LightScribeService) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

This is my personal computer and I have computer administrator access.

I just recently bought an external Memorex Multi Format DVD Recorder with LightScribe. The recorder came bundled with Nero Suite Software configured for this drive.

I have the previous version of Nero already installed with additional plugins and codecs added. I do not want to installed the bundled version since they state some of it has only 30 day functionality. I can update my Nero with Lightscribe capability, but I have to install the LSS update.

Please help! What can I do to get this installed?

Thank you,

GW

The Error 1920 is caused when the Windows installer failed to install the LightScribe System Software. This is a Windows error not directly related to the LightScribe System Software. Pease see the information available on the following URL:

http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?form=MSHOME&setlang=en-us&q=error+1920&mkt=en-us

It is possible that the LightScribe System software has become corrupted. Please try the following to uninstall the LightScribe System Software and enable you to re-install it with a clean install.

1. Select START, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs. From the Currently installed programs list, select the LightScribe System Software and click Remove. After the uninstall process is completed, reboot your system.

2. Re-install the software update downloaded from the LightScribe Software Update webpage. (Version 1.14.17.1 Released June 9, 2008

LIGHTSCRIBE SYSTEM SOFTWARE Windows (Windows Vista, XP, 2K (32-bit & 64-bit))

http://lightscribe.com/downloadSection/windows/index.aspx?id=810

If your problem continues, you may need to use the Windows installer cleanup utility from Microsoft. This utility is provided "as is" to help resolve installation problems for programs that use Microsoft Windows Installer.

I had LS version 1.14.32.1 installed, no issues.  Yesterday I decided to play with the darker contrast settings, and while in control panel, saw the update button.

So I attempted to update to LS 1.17.90.1 and everything went fine until it tried to start the new LS service and I also received the 1920 error.  Using XP pro, SP3.

Tried all the above, as well as some other options such as updating .net, etc no luck.  Attempts to install the diagnostic utility gave the same errors.

I finally had to manually scrub the registry and downloaded the 1.14.32.1 version again, which was a trick since I could only find it on the samsung odd site (using s-182M drive).

This worked fine, installed without issue.   So why am I posting?

1.  You may have an issue with the update that you don't know about yet.  I suspect issues with the drivers/manifest referenced by the "new" service.  The update's only a few days old.  Please advise.

2. Please add a link for old versions in the event the new one causes issues, as this one did.

Thanks!

I am having the same problem

Error 1920.Service LightScribeService Direct Disc Labeling service (LightScribeService) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

I have admin rights, as its my personal computer and I've tried your suggestions, but it still wont work. I cant even install the program... Any solutions?

EDIT: The older versions DO work. Only this one doesnt.. it keeps stopping at the "Starting Service"

(On a sidenote: the diagnostics also gives an error; I cant open it)

LightScribe Support Staff --- Please Notice!!!

I am having the same problem as posted in this thread.

This thread started in July and doesn't seem to be addressed by the Support Staff at all!!!

I am having this error:

Error 1920.Service LightScribeService Direct Disc Labeling service (LightScribeService) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

If someone could try to help we all would be very thankful...

I bought a HP dvd1040i DVD Writer sometime around the end of october 2008. I have been using it to burn dvd's and the lightscribe lables on the dvd's. I wanted to burn a few backups of some of my music cd's so I bought a 25 count spindle of HP LightScribe CD's. I made a copy of the cd just fine but when I flipped it over to burn the lable it ejected the CD and said it was not a lightscribe media. After reading Lightscribe's FAQ's I found out that the cause might be that the software needed to be upgraded. I had upgraded to LS_Update_1.14.25.1 when I installed the drive and everything worked ok then. I went to the LightScribe control pannel and found the update button and downloaded the new update LS_Update_1.17.90.1 from the LightScribe website. I ran the update file and it went ok untill it got to the last part about starting the services where it failed and when I canceled it it left me with nothing. I reinstalled the older version LS_Update_1.14.25.1 and everything worked ok again except that I still can't burn the CD lables... It still doesn't read the media as LightScribe media.

Common sense tells me that if it can read the DVD media there's nothing wrong with the drive, so why can't it read the CD media. The FAQ's said that the cause might be that the software needed to be upgraded so it could read cheap forms of media and newer forms of media.

I can't update the software because it doesn't work and I don't seem to be the only person having this problem.

I wiped out the computer formatted the harddrive and reinstalled windows XP. I then reinstall the bundled version of nero that came with the drive and ran the newest update LS_Update_1.17.90.1 and it still failed to install. I have looked up the 1920 error with microsoft and did everything that it said and nothing works. I have come to the conclusion that there has to be something wrong with the update software version LS_Update_1.17.90.1

If you could please help I really need this fixed or the lightscribe function of this drive is just a waste.

I have been excited about being able to lable my own CD's but now I am questioning if this was worth the price I paid.

I have exactly the same issue.

I've just been reinstalling my desktop PC from fresh (Windows XP Home, SP3) so I know there can't be any conflicts.  I downloaded the Lightscribe System Software (1.17.90.1) as I always make a habit to download the latest version when I reinstall things.

The installation hangs right at the end with the same message "Error 1920.Service LightScribeService Direct Disc Labeling service (LightScribeService) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."  I know I have sufficient priviledges because I'm the only user and I have admin rights.

Fortunately I had downloaded the LSS for my laptop at the end of October and still had the file - which turns out to be the older 1.14.25.1 version.  I installed this to the desktop PC and the installation completed like a charm.

I don't think that there can be any doubt that there is clearly a problem with the 1.17.90.1 version of LSS that doesn't occur with 1.14.25.1.

I'm glad I kept the old version now.

I made these two Posts on the previous Topic an I think you should know about it.

I don't know what the guys in Support will say, but I have an HP Pavillion dv9825nr Notebook PC with a LOT OF STUFF installed.  The System came with Windows Vista Home Premium SP1, a LightScribe Drive and an early version of the LSS installed.

Whenever the updates were posted I updated the LSS, the Template Labeler and the Diagnostic Utility to V1.17.90.1 as I have always done.

Since then, I've burned almost 20 CDs, and the only problem I've noticed is that the Diagnostic Utility won't take the correct icon.

I've also been using several of the over 80 Custom Labels I've developed on the CDs.

Some important news!!!

V1.17.90.1 of the Template Labeler generated a NEW folder an some new subfolders.  The NEW folder is different by just one space (" ") between Template and 'Labeler' and the new subfolders.

BUT, this made ALL of my over 80 Custom Labels to disappear, AND ALL of the labels I downloaded from this website also disappeared!!!

I'll have to figure out how to merge the old one with the NEW one.

Oh, by the way, it looks like they moved the executable into the NEW folder tree.  Also the new  version (V1.17.90.1) of the Diagnostic Utility refuses to take the correct icon, even when I tried manually changing it.

I've reported the above to Support and sent them an image showing the two sets of folders.

I solved my problem by merging the OLD "templates" folder under the OLD "contents" folder into the NEW "templates" folder under the NEW "contents" folder.  Both of them are under the "Program Files (x86)" folder.

It seems almost pointless to even make a post here... The support staff answered this thread back in july with the wrong answer which is clearly not correct since there is a new version of the software and pepole are still having problems with it.

I may have a answer (or maybe not) something to look at...

The minimum system requirements calls for:

1.3 GHz Processer 128 MB Ram  Windows XP/2000/Vista

I installed my drive in a computer that I built myself. A 1.0 GHz Processer 640 MB Ram  Windows XP.  It worked fine burning DVD's and DVD Lables, I didn't try to burn CD's or CD lables. I then installed the update LS_Update_1.14.25.1 and it still would burn DVD's and DVD Lables, but when I tried to burn CD's or CD lables it would burn a CD but not the lable it said that it could not detect any lightscribe media. I am using brand new HP brand Lightscribe CD from staples.

I have installed a new copy of windows XP = no change.

I have installed a new copy of Vista = no change.

I installed the drive in a Gateway 1.1GHz with 512 MB Ram and Windows Vista with update LS_Update_1.14.25.1 and it would burn lables to the CD before I burning the CD but not after...??? What's up with that???

I then installed the drive in another computer that I built myself, a 1.5GHz with 256 MB Ram with Windows XP and it will install the newest update LS_Update_1.17.90.1 but it won't detect the lightscribe media.

I am now at a loss... It works with the old update on a system with less than minimum system requirements but not with the new updates on a system with the minimum system requirements.

Any susgestions...

Alan Jackson

I had this same problem as everyone else here. I am running XP SP3. I found a link that let you download the older version of the software. Maybe this will help those until the bug is fixedin the newer version. The older verson can be found here...

http://www.9down.com/LightScribe-System-Software-1-14-25-1-30848/

or directly here...

http://download.lightscribe.com/ls/LS_Update_1.14.25.1_.exe

Hope this helps all. I installed it flawlessly and burned without complications.

Happy Holidays.

I have to agree with the concensus here and say it is a bug with the latest installer / lightscribe software, i too have this problem yet the other versions of the software are not erroneous!

You guys need to fix this bug as you have a monopoly and there is no one else we can go to to get new software for it.

The windows event viewer spews out a lot of errors when the service is started. It looks as though you had a drunk programmer working on the night when the code was made and he just jumped his way through the code without thinking.

Fix this bug!!

I have managed to debug the error in the installer. The following file causes the problem.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\LightScribe\Microsoft.VC80.CRT.manifest

The manifest file has the wrong version number in it. I managed to create a working copy of the manifest file which allows the installer to complete BUT causes the LightScribe software to crash within the following file.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\LightScribe\LSPrtEn.dll

I have given up now as I dont think it is my job to fix the errors of HP.

If you want to get your LightScribe software to install do the following.

1. When installation notifies you of its inability to start the service open the file C:\Program Files\Common Files\LightScribe\Microsoft.VC80.CRT.manifest in notepad and change the version to be as follows.

        version="8.0.50727.762"

Now tell the installer to RETRY the service start and the service will start successfully.

The only problem is is that the lightscribe software now crashes regardless of which app you use.

This is definitely a bug in the installer.

I also went through the, "Error 1920" situation a couple of weeks ago. I did everything the support team mentioned, wrote them about it and I even went to the length of formatting my system and reloading everything. Nothing worked. I decided after reading comments about older versions of the LLS working, I sought out and found a downlaod of an older version, (not an easy task - (about 3 - 4 hours of searching). I installed the older version and I am happy to announce that I am able to create a lightscribe labled disk!

No thanks to the support team here.

GOOD LUCK!

One last mention!!! Once I got a working version,,, I saved it and burnt it to cd so I always have a back-up, and I suggest everyone do the same!

Happy Holidays and a good, New Year!

PS:

Hopefully the supposed support for this sight will learn something, If they read this forum. But with it being HP, I seriously doubt it.

OK; Thanks to MrAudio, I have successfully installed the 1.14.25.1 system software file! However, I am still experiencing an error when I try to actually run the simple labeler software. I was wondering what version of the labeler you guys are using.

Thank you Mr. Audio!  Your post fixed my problem.  I was finally able to install this dam software.

Now I can't get an image to burn on the DVD using the LightScribe Template Labeler or Nero 7  The Nero 7 gives me a nice smudgy blur (perfect for the Sharpie), the LS Template Labeler does nothing.  Off to another forum I guess.

Burning an image on the disc?!? What a concept...I thought!  I guess it's back to using a Sharpie.

Great piece of software/hardware you have here.  Lightscribe owns Mr. Audio a debt of gratitude.  I struggle with that "1920 error" until I saw his posting.

I am having the same problem in work. Thank you Mr Audio for posting the installer. Since so many of us are having the same difficulty why aren't the tech support people engaging with the problem rather than making facile and generic suggestions?

I guess I didn't read as well as I thought I did. Sorry MrAudio, I thought the reference was for a software fix, not one of the posters on the board. Old man that I am, I'm new to posting on forums and did not realize I'd made three posts for one entry. I did use MrAudio's link to get 1.14.25.1 but have not tried it yet. Does anyone know if there is a significant difference between 1.14.25.1 & 1.14.19.1???

They have released a new version as of 1-30-2009 (1.18.1.1) but I have not had any luck installing it.  It does not have the 1920 error but does not start the systemtray utility or able you to launch the Config Utility via the Start Menu.

People, I found a solution after trying everything. All you need is to install .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 or higher. Normal 2.0 will cause problem.
