CD-RW not available on the market

I read that one of the nice things about LightScribe is the fact when you add new files/data to the CD, you are able to add it on the label; however, LigtScribe enabled CD-RW doesn't seem to be available on the market. Is this correct?

There are no technical reasons why RW discs can’t be manufactured, but since the LightScribe label is not erasable, there is little consumer demand for RW LightScribe media. Consumer demand will determine the future availability of different media formats. The media brands such as Verbatim, Imation, HP, Memorex, and TDK are the ones ultimately making the decision on what formats to offer.

John, thank you for your reply. As you said, LightScribe labels are not erasable, but can be added. In fact, they list it as one of the nice things about its capabilities. However, if you cannot add to the CD that I started out with, then it seems there is absolutely no need for Light Scribe to be able to append to once created label, or am I missing something? Is there a way to add data to once burned CD-R?

When they talk about adding to an already burned disk, I believe they are talking about adding text to an already burned image on the label. The addition of files to an already burned disk has also been around for a while. You do not need lightscribe for this. You do however need a RW disk. Depending on the software you are using for burning the information to the disk, to add additional information you have to make sure not to "close" the session, if you do, you can reburn the disk later but you have to redo ALL the files, then (if I remember correctly, it's been a while since I've used a RW disk) you can re-open the session and add files. In the last post you mentioned a CD-R, I'm guessing it was a typo and you meant to type CD-RW, once you burn a CD-R, that's it.

Actually that's not quite correct.  You are still able to add files to a CD-R after burning, as long as there is space on the disk and the disk hasn't been closed.  Being a CD-RW simply means that you can erase the disk which is not possible with a CD-R

Data witing and LightScribe labeling are done independently of each other. The LightScribe process does not close the disc when the process is finished. The drive can detect the position of the disc using the timing features in the center of the disc and you can continue to add content to blank areas of previously labeled discs.

Thanks, everyone, for your reply! I think trekkadude pointed out something I didn't realize. I didn't know that you could keep adding more data to CD-R after I put somethin on it. It shows I know very little about media!

So, now it makes sense about Light Scribe's claim of being able to append to existing label. What I was confused about was that since I thought it had to be CD-RW to be able to add more data to it, yet there is no Light Scribe capable CD-RW on the market, I didn't see how it would help for Light Scribe to be able to add new info on the label.

So, if you will bear with me..... how do you 'close' CD-R? I don't remember doing anything in the past after writing data to a CD, yet when I tried to add new information, I remember getting a message indicating that it had been burned already and therefore the operation was illegal. What did I do wrong?

Thank you in advance for you help!

to add more data on your disc you have to burn it as a "multisession" disc from the beginning otherwise it will be finalized automatically and therefore no adding possible.....

I'm sure I can't be the only person to want to burn a permanent label (e.g. Adam's Faves) to a LightScribe CD-RW then be able to erase & re-write my new mp3 faves to the disk every few weeks?

The label would never need to change, but the contents would! I don't want to waste a CD-R every few weeks because of my fickle tastes

A nice thing about lightscribe is if you added to a CD which you have already lightscribed the title and content labels on, it lets you add the new label to reflect the new contents, and will perfectly align it with what's been already lightscribed.

This started the whole question on this thread. If you want to erase and rewrite the whole content, naturally it won't make sense to burn parmament label lightscribed on the CD to start with. But not to worry, because evidently lightscribable RW cds are not available on the market anyways (makes sense!)

As long as new data can be added to CD-R, then I'm okay. I was just having hard time doing so, and that was the reason for my starting this thread. I never knew that I had to burn CD with 'multi-session' to be able to do that. So, thank you for this info!
