Good Afternoon,

My problem is: LS discs HP CD-R and DVD-R Ver. 1.2 won't show up at all when attempting to burn the 'data' side. The label side is printing but in concentric spirals, no graphics. These are brand new spindles and haven't had this difficulty with prior ones, data or label sides. I have Nero 6 with LS. My LSS is current at ver. 1.18.21.1. as is my LSS Diagnostics Tool. I've tried burning with Nero, Windows Media Player, RealPlayer and IMG Burn all current. Nero shows an error msg, "Disc required for compilation, CD-R/RW". "Disc type in recorder (empty)". All my burn programs get to the burn cycle, indicate disc not present, then hang including Nero, and the drive tray refuses to open all the while the light is flashing.

I have a scratch built desk top (no problems) with Windows XP Home Edition SP3 with current updates. One gb ram. My CD/DVD Rom is an ASUS 1612BL internal with LS, drivers current. I've never had this problem until now. I can still burn data on standard CD's and DVD's without a hitch.

I have tried:

1. LSS diagnostics. It states; Status OK, Scan complete: no LS configuration problems found. When media checking label side it states; Drive ASUS 1612BL 1.10.139, Media imaging parameter 116. When I media check data side, it states; Drive: same, Scan complete: same, then "No Media Detected".

2. I've uninstalled and re-installed all of the above programs, still the same results. I uninstalled and re-installed my CD Rom drive also, didn't help

3. I've cleaned the center of several discs, even though they are new, out the box. Should't have to do this but tried any way.

Any one have suggestions for me? I thank you.

Although rather odd it seems your new HP blank discs are the common denominator. The easiest thing to try would be one of your new HP discs that won't burn data in a known good system. You could also try a known good Lightscribe blank in your system. Those would be the quickest/cheapest methods of isolating the problem. It could be a compatibility issue with your older drive but the above methods should narrow the problem area. Personally I have found the Verbatim brand to be consistantly high in compatibilty across multi platform optical drive environments.

Thank you Jim.

I hoping this is the issue, but both CD's and DVD's? Perhaps it's the difference between HP ver. 1 and 1.2 discs although you would think they should burn the same especially with the updates I've made. You are right in that the cheapest way would be trying discs in another system and a good disc in mine. However I don't see the point of using another HP in mine rather I guess I'll get the Verbatim as you suggest. Should it be necessary to replace my drive, do you have any recommendations?

Thamk you again for your help.
