Disc Unreadable after adding LS Label

The burner I use is an Asus WH12LS30 Blu-Ray Burner. The media used is Memorex CD-R 52x.

This doesn't happen to me because I started truly verifying the integrity of my burns instead of relying on Nero's or Roxios "verify" feature that seems to do nothing but. Whether I'm forced to use a basic burning application or better app like ImgBurn, I'll perform at least a CRC32 comparison but prefer an MD5 compare that is throrough and ensures my session is parity with the source files.

In the past, when I used Nero's verify, it would always spin and even wheeze on a large flawed file but still report "successful verification". Performing a true byte check is better and I'm leery of any burner app that just states successful verificaiton without explaining it's method.

I say all of this because I used to believe I had successful burns that deteriorated or were munged by the etching process but actually weren't ever successful burning sessions and the etching had nothing to do with my flawed session.

What method are you using for verification ?

A free and unintrusive / easy to use MD5 generator and verifier is md5summer.exe, no installation required and free of charge, capable of performing MD5 verifications and the more complex but unnecessary SHA-1 hashing in case you have too much spare time.

(I have already tried some silicone free polish which did improve it a very small amount). As I have more discs that I am throwing away I will try some other things, but if it can be done it will increase the usefulness and take up of Lightscribe significantly.

HP Lightscribe Discs used to work but no longer can be read by any player

3 Replies, 3300 Views
Started by raptor
Last Posted to on Sunday, July 15, 2012 1:26:51 PM by Jim B

Unfortunately there have been many reports of substandard HP branded Lightscribe discs. In the past the most common complaint was the lack of disc recognition when trying to "print" the Lightscribe label. As to the discs becoming unreadable over time that would be a new (to my experience) complaint. The preferred DVD-R brand of consistant high quality Lightscribe enabled blanks has been Verbatim but as the saying goes past experience is not necessarily a guarantee of future results.

2007 might have been before the 1.2 version disc dye formulation improvement but I don't know if that has any bearing on your problem.

If you take a disc and use Windows Explorer to look at the file contents of the disc do you see any files within a VIDEO_TS folder? (file extensions such as .bup, .vob, .ifo , etc.?) If you see a .vob file within the folder (usually a pretty large file) and double click the file does it open and play a video?

I know they delayed release for at least one quarter but I haven't verified a rescheduled release. Try sending Verbatim corporate an email inquiry as to the projected release date......

HP LightScribe DVD-R not recognized?

1 Replies, 5695 Views
Started by ekrock
Last Posted to on Friday, December 09, 2011 12:04:05 AM by Jim B

You can try thoroughly cleaning the center hub area of the disc that contains the Lightscribe recognition and timing marks. That seems to solve the problem in some cases. Unfortunately it seems that since the Japan disaster the available Lightscribe media has been noticeably erratic in quality. Look at the increase of recent posts on this forum concerning this issue. It's just my personal experience but I have relied on Verbatim brand blanks for years. They have been consistantly high on quality and carry a 100% replacement guarantee from the manufacturer.

Don't forget the fact that Lightscribe is not a separate company. It is simply a disc labeling technology that two HP engineers developed around 2005 and HP offered it in their laptop and desktop PC's. There isn't even any official comprehensive Lightscribe technical support available from HP.

Media searching

0 Replies, 5404 Views
Started by Matthew Friend
Last Posted to on Wednesday, November 09, 2011 10:19:11 PM by Matthew Friend

For starters, I have to admit that I am a bit sad that despite the beautiful label possibilities exist with LightScribe, it seems few pre-made PC companies (including HP ...shame on them), are no longer including burner drives that support LightScribe.

That being said, I have a pretty dedicated effort going in trying to find good quality LightScribe media that I've seen photos of, but have so far had no luck in finding.

Despite some occasional potential possibilities, I have had no luck whatsoever finding LightScribe media of any kind, i.e. CD or DVD, much less Blu-Ray, that are either silver/grey or white in color.

Is it because it seems the public interest in LightScribe has died off? I can hardly find any retailer that carries any type of LightScribe media, much less good quality drives that can be purchased as an after market upgrade to my PC.

I mean seriously, would people just use a Sharpie or waste a TON of $$$ on ink and labels that will at some point peel off, smear, or even warp the disc and potentially ruin their Blu-Ray player or PC's player drive?

You would think that the public would prefer to save money versus wasting it.

That being said, has anyone, even overseas been able to find any grey/silver or white LightScribe media? If so, PLEASE post a link of where to find them.

If they don't exist, and the images I see at a number of places online are just Photoshopped or something... then the question remains... does LightScribe as a company want to stay in business? I mean seriously. I realize that for whatever reason it must be cheaper to produce media that is bronze in color, or a rainbow of colors that don't work well as the bronze ones do. People would prefer discs that are either pure white to burn black looking labels on, like text and such, or a neutral and preferred silver color that any image can be burnt onto to produce a much higher quality result in appearance.

Also, even with a older PC, much less a 6-core Intel or AMD processor and drives capable of burning the actual data at rates of 16X or greater for DVD and well over 50X for CD.... the problem being, is that people are impatient by nature. By now, it makes no sense whatsoever why burning drives are capable to burn gigabytes of data in a few moments take well over 15 to 20 minutes or longer to burn just 1 single LightScribe label. I realize I am not a computer engineer. However, if burning drives are capable of burning gigabytes worth of data with reliable results, there is no reason whatsoever that makes any sense to me why LightScribe won't update their technology and offer the ability to burn a professional high quality label in a minute or two at the most. Likewise, the public who still use LightScribe, want either white or silver discs. Where and how can we find them if they actually exist?

Please LightScribe, get major companies start including high quality LightScribe drives. Please start releasing both white and silver discs for CD, DVD, and also Blu-Ray.

Finally, P L E A S E update LightScribe technology so that labels can be burned just as quickly as drives can burn data.

*crosses fingers, hopes, and prays*

The answer is DVDs are slightly thicker then CDs.
So the surface of the DVD is closer to the burning laser. And this causes the burn to be lighter. I think the distance difference is like 1.37mm. Fred can tell you more.

If you can, try a Lightscribe disc you have successfully burned in the past. If it recognizes it as a Lightscribe disc you know you are dealing with a media issue.

That will cause discs to not be recognized.

Verbatum lightscribe DVD-R version no good

1 Replies, 8614 Views
Started by rebel
Last Posted to on Saturday, October 30, 2010 7:48:04 AM by Jim B

First off, does the computer that burned the discs that are not recognized as DVD-Video in other machines play the discs back? If it does, are they recognized as DVD-Video format or perhaps SVCD or some other non compliant MPEG-2 format? I am not aware of any difference on the burn (data) side of blanks whether thay are Lightscribe enabled or not. Since you seem to have experience burning DVD's I can't think of any reason at this point that would explain the solution to your problem. I don't change any settings (except maybe drop the speed one setting below the automatic detected selection) regardless of what brand or type of recordable disc I insert) and I really can't imagine you are recording on unfinalized discs containing some data thereby possibly destroying the DVD-Video file structure.

Some hardware players will also play DVD-ROMs or CD-ROMs containing "raw" MPEG video files; these are "unauthored" and lack the file and header structure that defines DVD-Video. Standard DVD-Video files contain extra information (such as the number of video tracks, chapters and links to extra features) that DVD players use to navigate the disc. Depending on what the discs are recognized by your computer are, try playing the disc on a SVCD compliant player. (If the Play Station is SVCD enabled then this guess doesn't apply) Good luck but keep checking in on the forum...the more heads involved, the better your chances of finding the problem.

By the way, look at the file structure in Explorer of a non-Lightscribe (plays in other players) and a Lightscribe disc (doesn't play in other players) you have burned....see if you notice any difference in structure or file size... I really can't imagine a lot of new corrupted discs but you have to start somewhere

And no, I don't see LightScribe coming out with a "Business card" shape disc due to the extra large ring of barcode stuff around the hole in the disc. There would be like no space to put an image on.

And duh, if it will only cost you like $7 more to get LightScribe capability, its worth it.

Do Lightscribe Audio CD's exist?

2 Replies, 11382 Views
Started by Greg Ledder
Last Posted to on Friday, October 08, 2010 11:52:20 AM by demonufo

The only difference between data CD-R's and the Compact Disc Audio CD-R's is not down to quality at all. The difference is that the Audio discs have a little file in the bootup sequence so that domestic hifi CD writers can use them, whereas they can't use the computer orientated data discs.

There is NO DIFFERENCE between the quality of these two types of disc. In fact the data discs that have a darker green hue can be less prone to read/write errors than most audio discs. Remember, the audio on these is just a series of 1's and 0's.

Actually, there is a big difference thinking about it. The Audio discs cost a helluvalot more. Save your money, and use whatever you can find that fits the job.

Oh yeah, and just in case you were wondering, I've run a little recording studio for years, and have a little bit of experience on this front. Just beginning to mess around with the whole Lightscribe idea though, and save a few quid potentially (although increasing time delays!)

The LS Control Panel has a setting to darken the label.

I did an experiment with a Forum User that I share My Custom Templates with.

I burned the LS Template called "Mondrian" (Multiple Image Items & One Text Item) with some large (1200x1200 pixel JPG File) "calibration" Images I use to check my drives.

He is a Photo Specialist & I sent him a high resolution scan of the resulting label.

We examined the scan at a large magnification & found "rings" that were very very close together, but barely visible.

We concluded that the visibility of the "rings" is "normal", but it is a result of the burning process & very very dependant on the drive model.
