Hi all, I'd been plagued by smudging of my Lightscribe labels' edges for the longest time, even on HP discs.
I didn't know that it was easily corrected:
THE LABEL MUST BE DONE FIRST, ON A BLANK DISC.
The disc contents MUST be burned AFTERWARDS.
I don't know why, but it works.

This is good, now that someone actually found a reason for SMUDGING!
I have alway done it this way just because of the time & possibility of a failure, but to actually have a GOOD REASON!
GOOD WORK!!!!!
We need more users to try things & report here!!!!!

Yes, I too was leaving the label for last, for the same reason ~ to be sure the content was burned properly first!
I had searched everywhere for meaningful ways to fix the smudged edges, and found nothing.
Even printing in the 'Normal' mode, not the 'Best', and doing nothing else on the computer during the printing time, did not prevent the smudged edges.
Now, at this moment, I'm completing my emails and am posting here, while I have already burned 2 perfect labels in the 'Best' (darkest) mode, and burning another one....which just came out perfect.
I'm amazed that the Lightscribe developers have not figured this out and keep blaming the DVD drives ....
I hope people pass this on......

I just burned two discs. I did the data first and then the LightScribe label. They both work just fine.

I dont think that you need to create a label first. I have a spindle of brand new disks - the application tells me to clean the "smudges!!!" on random disks. The same disk works after a few tries - WTF is going on here? Its so frustrating.

Different methods seem to solve a problem for different people with seemingly the same complaint...don't have a good answer for that. Out of curiosity what brand of Lightscribe blanks are you using?

I use HP, CDs and DVDs, but I have also used Verbatim, with the same problem of smudging of the edges, in EVERY printing mode I tried, until I started printing the label first, and the disc content afterwards.
I'm just grateful it works fine this way, because I had thrown away so many discs.....

Kudos on discovering a solution to your labeling problem. The sequence of data/labeling is not supposed to matter. Over the years, Verbatim has shown itself to be among the highest in quality and consistency. That said, whatever works is the sequence you use. Once again, congrats!!!

The LS drive is done by laser etching, there is no ink. I just started using it yesterday burning then etching and out of about 13 discs i have done not one of them has had any "smudging" issues. however if u are having an issue try the memorex discs. i seem to be having good luck with them.

The labeling process usually heat the disk slightly, also it is the touchiest.
It is just better to do the LABEL side 1st.
I more or less did this from the beginning & haven't had most of the problems Users report!
