I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "original". Lightscribe does not manufacture any optical drive, the Lightscribe function is to laser etch a Lightscribe compatible disc using a Lightscribe enabled optical drive. A Lightscribe enabled drive should have the Lightscribe wave logo on the drive door and has an additional laser lens internally.

One thing you should do is to check the drive and make sure it truly LS enabled.
This is FAQ 67 in the Knowledge Base: http://www.lightscribe.com/support/kb_searchResults.aspx?question=drive&topicid=
HP has screwed one Forum User for almost 6 months to straighten out the problem caused by a mis-indentified drive in their Parts Database. They could have installed this drive in your system. The drive didn't have an LS Sensor, but had the LS "swoosh" on the front of the drive.

When you are looking at a product to purchase, look for the phrase "LightScribe". If it says LightScribe on the product or in the product description then it does LightScribe.
