I have tried to print several images onto disc. The picture prints to a degree but it is so light it's barely visible. Why is this ? The results bear no resemblance whatsoever to the samples I've seen on your site.(I have tried modifying the control settings but that didn't help either).

 Any help would be appreciated.Thanks.

I would do 3 things: first off, install or reinstall the latest system software, then though it sounds as if you have enabled the contrast enhancement already, I would go to the setting again, change it to normal, reboot, then go back again and change it back to "darker". Reboot a second time. It is possible the setting did not "stick".

Lastly, get some compressed gas and/or a DVD cleaning disc, and physically clean the drive. The laser could be obstructed by dust.

I've seen many tips for this, like cleaning the media, cleaning the burner, but unless in very particular situations I don't think this is the correct answer.
What I've learned is that you need to burn it more than once. The more you burn it, the darker it gets.
I usually burn the same media two or three times depending on the design. I also use black & white images or use an image editor to turn it b&w and increase the contrast.
You can even take the media out of the burner to check it and put it back to burn it again if not satisfied with the result. It will be repositioned and the new burn will fit exactly the previous one.

One feature I would like to see in these LS softwares would be an option to specify in how many  passes one would like to burn the media.

Hi peerrepe !

Have you tried changing the setting in the LS Control Panel to the darker setting?

I did an experiment and found that this makes the Image roughly equivalent to 2 burns.

P. S.
If the Image doesn't show the first time, I've found that cleaning the LABEL side DOES work!

Yes, I have it set to darker. Not enough. Still have to burn it more than once. I have two different drivers and it is the same for both. One is an external LG and the other one is an internal HP driver. And I also tested different softwares, like Nero Cover Design and Cyberlink LabelPrint besides the  LightScribe Template Labeler .

In all of them I set the contrast to the maximum and still need to burn more than once.

thanks!

Hello again peerrepe !

This probably isn't your problem.

One thing to note is that DVDs have 1 more plastic layer over the LS Coating than CDs.  Because of this, DVDs will come out lighter than CDs.

What brand of disks are you using?

I can only seem to find mostly Memorex & HP DVDs.

From what I've heard, Verbatim seem to be the best brand.

It occurs the same with CDs and DVDs (I agree it is a bit more noticeable with DVDs, but I also burn CDs more than once). I've been using mostly HP media (by the way, HP is the inventor of this technology isn't it?), but also have some Maxprint media and some colored ones which are TDK.
I'm just starting in this LS business. I bought my first LS burner less than an year ago, an external slim drive, LG GP08.

Hello again peerrepe !

Yes, LS is a subsidiary of HP, but I'm not sure who created the technology, most probably HP.

I'm using an HP Pavillion dv9825nr Notebook PC, running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1+.
I also have an HP PhotoSmart C8180 All-In-One Printer.  Both have built-in LS Drives.
Everything has been running LSS fine since 4/08.

I use Memorex disks and also HP disks almost all the time, because they are the only ones I seem to find.

If I have any problems with labeling a disk, I clean the center (hub) of the disk before burning the LABEL side first.

I use the LS Template Labeler for the LABEL side and NERO 9 for the DATA side.

I had trouble with the first two spindles I bought.

One disk had a bad DATA side and another (Memorex) had to be re-cleaned in the center (hub) of the disk 3 times of 20 turns of the cleaner, but it burned successfully.

I've also fooled around a little with the LS Simple Labeler.

I've developed 259 Custom Templates (in 44 Collections + 5 Private Ones), 108 Images (in 12 Collections), 174 Icons, and 4 Test Background Images for the LS SL, and have shared them with 233 Forum Users.

My second drive came with an HP SLIMLINE S5320BR INTEL CORE 2 DUO E7500 4GB 500GB desktop that I just bought last February, running Windows 7 Home Premium.
Currently I'm using Nero 9 for the data side and either LS Template Labeler or Nero Cover Design for the label side, but I hardly use their templates. I prefer to design my own labels  using some image editor (mostly PaintShop Pro X2) for background and text as I used do when printing photo paper labels using Neato and Pimaco CD labels. The only difference is that now I prefer to turn the images to greyscale before printing the LS for better contrast.
I only use them for personal stuff, like photo slideshow DVDs (using Photodex ProShow Producer) or to burn my old VHS tapes
converted to DVD format.

Hello again peerrepe !

I also use the LS TL to do the LABEL side & Nero 9 to do the DATA side.

I tried the built-in burn of Vista, but found some things I didn't like.

How I create Labels Containing a Track List
  • I've put together some stuff I use to create CD Labels.
  • I wrote up the procedure I use in a PDF File.
  • I make PDF Files of any Documentation I create.
  • I have V1.14.32.1 of the LSS & since Version 1.17.90.1 of both the LSS & the corresponding Diagnostic Utility.
  • I include an "Additional Stuff" Folder which contains anything I create while developing My Custom Templates.
  • I created ZIP Files for 6 Windows Vista "Right-Click" Directory Commands I developed to support making Track Lists & other procedures I use.
  • I "ripped off" the "Template Playlist Beta" (For which LS has NO documentation, NO source, & LAID OFF the Technician) "Full" & "Half" Disk Templates; fixed them; & then create a ZIP File of the two templates.
  • I have a PDF that contains "Template vs Simple Labelers" - a comparison of what is the structure of each template.
  • I found 6 FREE Tools I use for development, & have more I am testing.
  • I have a PDF which contains a "Mini Resume" & a lot of "LightScribe Stuff" I've researched.
  • I continually develop PDFs on the Tools I use for development.
  • I've developed 259 Custom Templates (in 44 Collections + 5 Private Ones), 108 Images (in 12 Collections), 174 Icons, and 4 Test Background Images for the LS SL.
  • I developed 4 Test "borders" for the Simple Labeler.
  • I developed a New Custom Wedding Template for one Forum User.
  • I developed 11 Custom Templates for 5 other Forum User from Sample Images they provided or Detailed Descriptions.
  • I developed 4 Custom Templates which use Circular Text Items & Circular, Oval, & Diamond Shaped Images.
  • I developed 6 User Defined Functions in VBA for Excel.
  • I fixed one LSL File for another User by changing a White Outline of some Text to Black.
  • I created Previews of all my Custom Templates & Images & have Mini-Catalogues of both as PDF Files.
  • I created 174 ICONS & a PDF Preview.
  • I tend to concentrate on Filling the entire disk surface especially with TEXT, Bold, Outline, White Text, & More Font Control.
  • I published 13 Newsletters & a List of Newsletter Topics about what I've been doing & 2 other FREE Programs I've been researching.
  • I have studied the XML parts of the 2007 Versions of Microsoft Office Access, Excel, & Word.
  • I have all this & more in My MS Windows Live Skydrive.
  • I am working to develop more Custom Templates.
  • I am sharing my work with 233 Forum Users.
