I have a Pavilion dv7-4177nr notebook with

  • LightScribe Ply-ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-RW drive, 2-layer support
  •  New  I cannot get the Lightscribe to get found.  I updated all software from this site. I unistalled drive updated everything but diagnostic always say no lightscribe found I even changed the 1 to 0 on

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
    "allocatecdroms"="0"
HP Support no help updated Bio ect. I 'm pretty sure it is a drive recognition problem and they are way off.

Still does not recognize any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

    1) Make sure the drive has the additional Lightscribe laser lens...

    2) Is the drive recognized by Windows and does it have full read/write functionality? (other than Lightscribe printing)

    3) What  Label making program are you using?

    4) Download and install the LDU (Lightscribe Diagnostic Utility) from the download area of this site...

Run the utility..go to "Advanced View" - "Diagnostics" - "Get System Info"....Copy and paste the "LSS Version" and "System Settings" results.....

Out of curiousity why did you decide to edit the drive enumerator? (Not that it is definitely wrong..just would like to know your reasoning behind the change)

I don't know if is your typos on this forum or the driver version you used for the drive but the drive in your Device Manager does not seem to match the scanned LDU drive. Keep in mind that the registry does not tolerate typing errors...

Make sure that LSSrvc.exe is a running process in Task manager when you start your Labeling software. (The Lightscribe Template Labeler is an excellent free full featured labeling application)

Here is a link to photos to verify that a drive is Lightscribe enabled... check and post results:

        http://www.lightscribe.com/support/kb_view.aspx?f=67

Here is a link to a page that covers some of the common reasons for a Lightscribe drive not to be recognized...check and post results:

       http://www.lightscribe.com/support/kb_view.aspx?f=114

If neither of the above links addresses the problem since your current LSS version seems to be an overlay to the factory load uninstall the Lightscribe System Software through the Add/Remove Program section in Control Panel, making certain you are logged on with an Administrative logon. Shutdown and restart. If the uninstall completes without errors download the LSS version 1.18.22.2 and save it to the desktop. Install the LSS to the default directory once again making certain you are logged on with an Administrative logon.   Rerun the LDU and post results...

Jim that was a type o I may have found the problem I think HP put the wrong drive in. I seen a site maybe you know were they showed pictures of what the lightscibe drive should look like when the tray is open. It shows a second lens I have only 2 lenns side by side one I think is my Bluray the other for reg. dvd if you know the site with the pictures or if that sounds right let me know HP is sending me a new Drive anyway.

The first link in my previous post takes you to photos of the additional Lightscribe lens in a notebook optical drive. The additional lens that is present in a Lightscribe enabled drive (called a disc encoder sensor) is usually fixed (not on the moveable read/write arm) and lines up with the timing marks in the hub area of a Lightscribe enabled blank. It's function is to index and control the speed of the disc while the Lightscribe label is being burned. The actual label burning is performed by the same lens/laser assembly as the data burning process. I know there are single lens/double laser (read/write data) setups in later Blu ray drives but that may vary with manufacturer. So far all manufacturers utilitze a separate and non moving lens for Lightscribe indexing and speed control.

Thank you Jim it seems they installed a non Lightscibe drive even thogh it was supposed to be included. They are sending me a new drive. I hope installing the new drive will repair the problem. My current drive does not have a additional lens as you show in your picture.HP was unable to tell me if my current drive is a lightscibe using the number on Device manager.

I would recommend you uninstall the existing drive through  the "Remove Hardware" area of the Control Panel before installing the new drive. (when you get it) There's no sense to leave the installed configuration of an unknown drive (that you are never going to use) on a system. Post results when you receive and install the new (and hopefully correct) drive.....

Great news...I would appreciate it if you could copy & paste the System Settings report in the LDU (like you did earlier) and post it now that the drive is functioning. I would like to compare both of your reports to see if it may help in future diagnostics....Out of curiosity is your drive enumerator (you changed it to 0) still 0 or was it reset after installing the new drive?  Also how long ago did you buy the notebook? I wonder how many more like yours have the wrong drive installed from HP.  Thanks.....
