Why does this continue to happen? I am wasting CDs here thanks to crappy Lightscribe!!! Why don't they get their act together? Is it too much to ask for a perfect CD when I have to wait 25+ minutes?
Recently, I have been labelling my CDs, and about half of them were unsuccessful so far (label almost coming out to the end but stopping short and smearing) Out of 6x, 2 have been unsuccessful. So that's 1/3.
I know HAVE TO test before burning (ie. use a ruined disc) before doing the actual disc to get an idea if this will work. Sometimes if I can get it going the drive will continue to produce good discs.
HP should be ashamed of themselves for jumping the gun on this. It would be a great application IF there weren't so many problems with smearing. I used to think HP was a quality company, but I am changing my opinions (along with Sony).
One more thing...what's with the crappy CS, HP? Is it too much for a company to stand by their products and offer excellent CS?
SO...what can I do to prevent this smearing? It's pizzing me off.

What Operating system and brand and model # of DVD burner are you using? What label making program are you using?

One thing to remember is that the disk Image is 1200x1200 Pixels!
The lower the dimensions of your Image, the blurrier the result will be.
If the dimensions of the Image are greater than this, the better the result will be.
The Image used is resized to 1200x1200 Pixels.

It's SMEARING. It's not BLURRY.
Smearing, like for example, you paint something then with your fingers you rub it around. That is smearing and that is what it looks like.

I am using the Lightscribe disc labelling program. Windows 7. And Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology (TSST)corp TS-H652M.

Make sure you have the latest LSS (Lightscribe System Software ver.1.18.20.1). You can get the latest version from the download section of the Lightscribe website. Based on your description of the failure (late in the burn) I doubt the Lightscribe Diagnostic Utility will show any problem but you can try downloading and running that.
Also try this: After setting up the label printing, open the Task Manager and select the Processes tab. Right click on the LSPrintDialog.exe *32 process and change the Process Priority to High (the highest priority, Realtime, can't be used -- it defaults back to High). Then click on the Print button.
Is this an OEM PC with Windows 7 and the drive preinstalled? I don't remember this model being utilized with Windows 7. I kind of remember this drive being a few years old and used in varied OEM XP and Vista builds. In addition to the items indicated in the above link, Lightscribe printing smearing can also be a timing issue affected by an incorrect IDE controller driver, usually because of an improper driver selection during a Windows 7 OS upgrade. Outdated drive firmware has also been identified as contibuting to timing issue problems. What firmware version is on your drive?
